Cladding vs Lining

🔍 Introduction to Cladding and Lining in Piping

In the field of material engineering, and more specifically in industrial piping, there are two essential techniques to enhance durability and resistance: Cladding and Lining. Both methods protect pipes from corrosion, wear, and other damages, but they do so in different ways and for distinct applications.

🛡️ What is Cladding?

Cladding involves the application of a corrosion-resistant layer onto the inner surface of pipes. This process is typically performed through welding, where a more noble and resistant metal is deposited onto the base material.

The primary goal of Cladding is to create a physical barrier against corrosive environments, especially in industries such as petrochemical, where exposure to aggressive substances is common.

🔗 What is Lining?

On the other hand, Lining refers to the internal coating of pipes using a non-metallic element.

Lining is particularly useful in applications where corrosive fluids or high solid content could erode or damage the pipeline from within. This technique is critical for maintaining pipeline integrity in severe service conditions, ensuring efficient and safe operation.

🛠️ Key Differences Between Cladding and Lining

While both processes aim to protect piping, their differences lie in the application methods and approach.

  • Cladding uses welding techniques to apply a protective metallic layer.
  • Lining, in contrast, protects the interior through a coating that varies in material depending on the nature of the transported fluid.
